The headrests discussed in this article refer specifically to the built-in headrests that are part of the car seat itself. This does not include additional aftermarket head or neck support accessories, such as side cushions, U-shaped neck pillows, car cushions, or horn-shaped pillows.
Some of these add-on products require specific types of car headrests for proper installation. That’s why, in this guide, the PERO team will introduce the most common headrest types found in vehicles and explain their key features.
The four most common types of automotive headrests on the market include:
Cylindrical Rods
Cube Shapes Rods
Single Rods
Performance Seats
Car Headrests
Headrest Style
The following section explains the four main types of headrests and whether they are compatible with PERO add-on side cushions.
● Cylindrical rods
This type of headrest is supported by two round metal rods that extend from the bottom of the headrest and are fixed into the top of the seat back. It is currently the most common headrest design used across car models. However, the rod length, width, and the distance between the rods may vary depending on the vehicle.

● Cube shapes rods
This design is similar to the Cylindrical Rods, with the key difference being the shape of the rods—they are squared instead of round.

● Single rods
This type of headrest is supported by only one rod and is fixed directly onto the car seat. It is usually non-removable and non-adjustable.
✕ Not compatible with PERO add-on side cushions
● performance seat
This headrest is built as a single piece with the seat, often in a racing-style design. It is not removable and cannot be adjusted.
